Last weekend my wife and I were enjoying ourselves at the pool with our two daughters and witnessed something commendable. We saw one of our new life guards handle a recurring negative situation in a very professional way. I’m sure many of you are aware of our pool’s “history” with uninvited guests, especially last Summer. Thanks to the hard work of our Pool Committee leaders, Mr. Dick Strobel (former Chair) and Ms. Sarah Ricke (current Chair), along with assistance from Mr. Ray Bryant and our Board of Directors, a contractor was hired to provide life guard services for the pool. This investment proved its value in our presence the other day.

Two individuals approached the gate entrance asking to be let in. They did not have a pool key, nor could they prove their resident status. If you were at the pool last year, this was a typical response given by non-residents who just wanted to take a swim and usually led to some near-confrontations when people were turned away. But this year was different. The female life guard who addressed the situation handled it with professionalism and tact. She politely diffused the situation even as the two individuals continued to press her for admittance. Nevertheless, the life guard stood her ground and got the two people to eventually leave. No cuss words were needed (like I heard last year). No fighting. Just a ‘matter-of-fact’ and deliberate handling of the situation was how she went about her business. Count us as very impressed.

Overall, I’ve heard nothing but good things about our life guards and just wanted to share this with everyone.
