For anybody who isn't sold on the recycling idea, I suggest signing up the next time TDS has a tour of their site. Seriously, I've lived in a LOT of places but I've never been to a dump (landfill) that doesn't smell until I went to this one. They really do lead by example. You all volunteered and when you volunteer one should not expect anything in return. Like I stated in my complaint e-mail, you as President could not approval right away from the budget committee to buy paper plates and cups for an Association meeting yet to spend $900.00 for party was no problem and got approval right at the same Board meeting. The response from the budget person was “just give me the name of the restaurant so I can write the check.” If I would have wanted to attend the party I guess I would have no problem authorizing the spending of someone else's money to have a good time. I can assure you that our HOA Bylaws does not allow for this type of expenditure. If the HOA attorneys had to get involved then this had unethical spending written all over it. The Board should reimburse the Association for the $900.00 that benefited a few. Sorry, but you have not justified the decision in spending $900.00 for party. Before mid-2006, there had been several attempts to establish a functioning Amberwood HOA. Most of these attempts had failed. I’m not blaming anyone. We are all over-worked and it is difficult to find adequate time just to spend with our own families. But in the middle of 2006, a dedicated group of people came together and re-organized the HOA. These people devoted themselves to the organization and donated hundreds and hundreds of hours over the course of the rest of the year. A committee structure was put in place and regular meetings of the HOA were held. I have never worked with a more committed group of men and women who served selflessly to get the HOA on its feet. Some of us felt that this hard work should be rewarded at Christmas time. We did not want to lose these people. We wanted for them to continue to work for our beautiful Community. And we wanted to find some small way to show the HOA’s appreciation of their hard-earned efforts. You will note that this was a one-time expenditure and the HOA Board has not done this on an annual basis since that first, very difficult year. Please understand, I am not trying to make excuses for this expenditure and you are welcome to disagree with our decision, but our Amberwood Committees are composed of hard-working individuals who donate a great many of their few spare leisure hours to the operation of our community and on occasion money out of their own pockets. These are hours they could have spent with their families instead. They are not paid for their service to work with the committees. And we did not try to hide the fact from the HOA membership that we rewarded their initial dedication to getting our HOA well-established once again. I am sorry that you disagree with the decision made by our board a year and a half ago. It is perhaps more difficult to make decisions in a leadership role than it might first appear on the surface. I can assure you that our HOA Bylaws does indeed allow for this type of expenditure after much discussion with our HOA attorneys. Our HOA Board works hard to spend our HOA funds as efficiently and wisely as possible. We encourage participation in the HOA, including input into the budgetary process. We really could have used your input back in 2006. We are always looking for dedicated volunteers willing to work hard to make our HOA function better. We have many different committees (all volunteer) that serve our neighborhood which include Neighborhood Beautification Committee, Website Committee, Safety Committee, Social Committee, Newsletter Committee, Pool Committee and Covenant Committee. If you would like to serve on one of these committees and make a positive contribution to our HOA, we would welcome your participation. Please feel free to contact me with your committee preference and I can put you in touch with the committee chairman. And I hope to see you at the next HOA meeting on March 19, 2008. Our hard earned money should not be used for something like this. I would like to see a reimbursement and the money be used to benefit everyone.
